CRAFT (SOUTH AFRICA)

Clay Formes by Olivia Barrell, 2023
R1630 from The Book Lounge

A new language around clay has been unearthed: in this exquisitely curated book, via rich imagery and contemplative essays, clay and function have deliberately parted ways, and in its place is a dance between sculptor and this infinitely transmutable medium. Every one of the 30 South African artists featured has not only moulded clay but been profoundly moulded by it, bringing a deeply personal and fresh narrative to this ancient and primal art form. LC

CONTEMPORARY FICTION (ZIMBABWE)

Glory by NoViolet Bulawayo, 2022
R260 from The Book Lounge

Set in an imaginary African country, this scathing satirical novel explores politics via a cast of barnyard animal characters who represent the ruling class, the military, cabinet ministers and the common people. A fictional account of the 2017 Zimbabwean coup d’état that eventually resulted in the resignation and removal of President Robert Mugabe, it demonstrates Bulawayo’s brilliant ability to capture each of these varied voices. CONTEMPORARY FICTION (DIASPORA)

Maame by Jessica George, 2023
R355 from The Book Lounge

Relatable and empowering, this critically acclaimed debut novel tells the story of 24-year-old Madeline Wright, also known as Maame, as she leaves home in search of a new life untethered from familial obligations. However, the challenges of adulthood and a sudden loss reshape her journey, marking it with difficult emotions and realities. This witty and charming novel not only highlights the awkwardness and anxieties of early adulthood, but also powerfully exposes the societal tendency to place the burden of caregiving on black women. Maame is a touching and unforgettable read.
